1998 Subaru Outback Sport (Impreza) review from North America

"If you drive in snow, Subaru is the way to go!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Left rear wheel bearings replaced twice under warranty - I guess they fixed the problem correctly the second time because it hasn't happened since.

Rear wiper seized up after only a couple of years - but after the warranty expired. I didn't replace it and don't really miss it.

Had to replace the engine due to an oil leak - the engine ran low on oil - and crank bearings started to fail - I blame this on myself however, I was careless in checking the oil, and wasn't paying attention to the car. Purchased a used engine imported from Japan with maybe 30K miles on it - so far so good. Replaced the clutch while the engine was out and it showed about 70% wear at 130,000 km which is not bad.

Drivers side power window master switch is causing me trouble - the passenger's window won't roll up and this is due to a fault in the master switch - $130 Canadian to buy a new one - I've rigged a $5 switch from Radio Shack that allows me to roll the window up and I'll probably leave it at that until I can figure out how to repair the master without buying a new one.

I've replaced the pads in the brakes once - again, not bad as the car is at 160,00 km now (100K miles).

General comments?

My little Impreza station wagon is a great little car. It seats 4 comfortably and when you fold the seats down you can cram a good deal of stuff in it.

With snow tires on, it is unstoppable in the snow - Subarus are very popular in northern Ontario for that reason! The anti-lock breaks work well too.

The car is reasonably quick - but I wish I had the 2.5 L engine - and handles very smoothly - it's very well balanced.

Decent fuel economy.
