1992 Suzuki Swift GT review from North America
"This zippy econobox is an autocrossers wet dream"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
This is an update to a previous review, 7-8 months later.
I've upgraded the exhaust to 2" with high flow cat & straight through mufflers, excellent mid-top end gains.
The cv boots were replaced, I feel stupid for getting the dealer to do it after I saw how easy it was. cost about a hundred dollars parts & labour for the two outers.
The tranny and engine are sounding like I might need a rebuild soon, but I'm amazed at how they've stood up. I take the car up to 8500rpm just on the way to get groceries. it boggles me every day how well it goes.
The suspension bushings are far too soft & deform under extremely hard cornering, so I've ordered a set of replacements from whiteline australia ($240cdn for a complete setup with castor bushings)
General comments?
This car is insane, it handles like a go-kart, the suzuki branded recaros (they really were made by recaro) hold you really well. I've added all sorts of basic mods & the car has been responding incredibly. a rally chip ($50us) has made tuning the engine way easier, richened the fuel mixture a bit, & removed the rev limiter, definately pulls better. strut bars front (top & bottom) & rear (top) have really stiffened up the car on hard cornering. and I've had to upgrade to some very sticky 185/55/r14 tires to try to keep it all under control. the cars been lowered about an 1.7 inches and the shocks have been drilled & re-filled with 30w oil (cost about $10 for the mod).. the ride is very very firm now, but the cornering is insane, I've blown past corvettes & the likes on all sorts of mountain highways. the engine just loves the higher rpms, as long as you keep it under 9000rpm it seems flawless. the tranny is still holding up fine, but both the engine & tranny will probably get a rebuild this winter.
I don't think you can go wrong with one of these cars, you may not beat a 5L mustang on the drag (every time), but you'll be laughing every time you find a corner to go around. watch for rust & make sure to change the timing belt.
