1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5 review from North America
"Tough reliable indestructable beast"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Absolutely nothing went wrong with this truck. I abused it daily with piece of mind and took it on tough trails without ever thinking I won't make it back. I've had 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees, but after my last 4Runner, which was a 1990 V6 3.Slow, blew up due to the common head gasket issues. The 4 cyl although underpowered with minor bolt ons becomes as grunty as the V6 with less fuel consumption.
I have no complaints until it was stolen from me when I went to Finland on vacation. Sadly I did not have theft insurance so nothing was covered (lift kit, new 33x12.5 tires, bush wacker fender flares, front and rear bumpers, mp3 player etc..
General comments?
I loved this since the first day I owned it. These trucks were made to last forever, but in a place like Canada rust eats their bodies away if uncared for, but the motor will go forever and ever. Way better than the Energizer Bunny. Many people don't tend to the oil on Japanese cars, which is their downfall. Keep oil in them and they'll go as long as there are tires on the truck.
I would buy another one in a heart beat if I had the cash and it was a good deal. Try to find a 1985 because they came with solid front axles, which makes a big improvement upon their off-road capabilities. I loved the handling on my 4Runner, and removing the top gets you a lot of looks. Chicks dig these toys too.
There was nothing I did not like about my truck, but I do hope whoever stole it gets hit in the head by a grizzly bear.

Top Gear "How to Kill a Toyota", you'll get the idea. You cannot kill these trucks.
