1995 Toyota 4Runner SR5 from North America - Comments

"Junk!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well where do I begin. In the past two years starting with 2002. My Engine blew up at 108,000 and I bought the truck Toyota Certified so I had a 100,000 mile warranty. Therefore I had to purchase a $5000.00 rebuilt Jasper engine. The mechanic said it was no fault of my own, the oil just disappeared out of the engine, it didn't leak, so it must have burned out while I was driving. I get oil changes faithfully every 3000 miles. Just this past Thursday my sending unit in my gas tank went up (which could have blown my truck up I was told) which caused all the power in my truck to go to the frame of the truck. It staled and then started smoking. Now I have another $1,500.00 bill I have to pay because I'm still paying on my truck (5 year loan) and I'm still paying for the $5000.00 engine I bought last December. UGH!! Never will I buy a Toyota in my life again. So all together I've probably paid over $30,000 for a 3 year old Toyota.

General comments?

Do not buy a 1995 or younger Toyota 4Runner!

I'm with you, man. Have you heard of all the problems with their head gaskets? I would caution anyone from purchasing a 4-runner without a power-train warranty!!! Once you exceed the warranty, get rid of it!!!

I feel for you as well. Many yotas go a bit longer, example, I have an '89 3.0 4runner with 285,000 miles on it and it runs like a top. I'm very thankful for that. Sorry to hear you got a lemon.

Frank.

Those of you with poor experiences, are the engines the 3.0 V6? I'm looking at buying a 95 and it is 2.4L manual. It has 133k miles on it and the owner says they've never done anything, but regular maintenance on it except once replaced the idler arm. Any suggestions for me?

Well you can say I'm in the same boat.I've a 95 4runner an the same thing took place a head gasket went out at 93,000 an the sad thing I had a warranty I bought from the broker that sold me the 4runner.I'm still having problems getting them to pay for the repairs, but as an up an up the 4rummer is a good truck just like any car or truck you take very good care of it an it will take you anywhere you need to go.

I, too, HAD a 4-Runner, V6, but it had head gasket problems at 76k and 112k. Also vastly underpowered. Of all the good things I have heard about Toyotas, this was the fourth Toyota I owned and will be the last.

1995 and older in the 3.0 L V6 is Russian roulette. The head gaskets in the 4 cylinder were good.

Owned 7 Toyota's for years - mostly Land Cruisers and now Rav4 Your Toyota experience is heavily dependent on who is your dealer - some great and a few bad trying who try to sell you for more profits and do not stand behind repairs.

Looking at few used 1994-98 Runners some with 5 speed manual transmission which I prefer since 4x4 automatics don't last or are expensive to repair / replace.

Was told to Not buy for any price Toyota 3.0 V6 because of head gasket design / blow out problems it was a bad Toyota engine but 3.4 V6 and 4 cylinder (22RE) engines are very good and with proper maintenance will be good for years and many miles.

What are others experience with mid 90's 4 Runners especially with 5 speed transmissions / 4 cylinders or 3.4 V6's - do they have good power, gas mileage etc Have no interest in buying problem 3.0 V6's.

I just bought a Toyota 4runner 95 model from a friend who had put new heads on it approximately 18 months ago. It had slight miss that I thought a tune up would cure. Now, the # 4 cylinder has only 50 lbs. of compression. Not sure if it's the head gasket, as he said it had had the miss for a few months.
