1990 Toyota 4Runner SR5 review from North America
"Virtually unstoppable!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Clutch assembly@ 300,000.
Wire from fuel pump corroded causing car to stall (second time this vehicle left me stranded in 10 years)
Wheel bearings.
Gas tank, fuel filler neck.
Alternator replaced twice most recent at 352,000.
Tie rod ends, stabilizer links, idler arm.
Water pump died at 345,000.
Wire from EFI grounded on front fender causing fuses to blow constantly-this was a perplexing problem, but my mechanic neighbor helped me sort it out.
Rear window track corroded, and wiring got ballsed up, so I hooked up a direct wiring system in order to use the window. This apparently is a problem on all older 4 Runners in places that have snowy slushy winters.
General comments?
Most problems I have had with this vehicle are age related. This vehicle has been to the depths of hell and back and has given me very few headaches. The 2 door model is a bit cumbersome for passengers. I have a newer 4Runner now, a 1995 with 263,000 (I plan to drive this one until 500,000) -nice vehicle, but have had a few minor problems with it already, such as heater relay switch, head gasket. Would love to be able to afford a brand new one, but they cost $$$$$$$$.
