"I love my 4runner except for head gasket problem"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Head gasket blew at 122,000 miles

and again at 144,000

and now today it is starting to do it again at 156,000

replaced starter at 150,000 (okay)

General comments?

I went to toyota dealership when it first blew the head gaskets to see if there was a recall

they said none.

I emailed Toyota Corp. they said there were no recalls.

I called again the second time it happened and they still said no.

Mechanic told me "you drive too much"

I heard from other people that there is a recall.

I think you are a little optimistic of a recall on a 10 year old car. The cylinder head is warped. Get a machine shop to skim it for you, or fit a new cylinder head and head gasket.

Don't ask any main dealer to do it - none of them will have the equipment or the expertise.

I just returned from Japan and I owned a '92 and the head gasket blew as well. Sometime in '04 Toyota in Japan recalled them (I think 90-95 models). I had heard it was a very common problem in that particular engine. Guess the ones imported to the US had the same problems. I'm shopping for an 00 or newer, wish me luck!!

Yes yes, bummer.. I recently bought a 95 4runner and had the pressure test done by a dealer and they said perfecto. Next week after buying it I noticed that coolant fragrance and began seeking it out. I found a small drip from the head gasket. Also I found out toyota had a recall on 90-early 95 runners and trucks for bad gaskets. Unfortunately, early 95 means before 10/94 production. Even worse my runner has 96k miles and on carsurvey. org I found over 100 owners with similar milelage and the same problem!!! So I called the dealer and they said, you never know with pressure tests... Next I call toyota corporate and they say, gee, we fixed that problem a few hundred cars before yours so woops. After much pushing and crying, they told me to pay to get it fixed and send in the info for a potential reimbursement. So you might what to do the same. I will keep this site updated on my adventure and everyone who reads this should call 1800.331.4331 or 1800.404.7636 and please give them hell!!!
