1997 Toyota 4Runner SR 5 review from North America
"If you need a mid-sized SUV, you can't go wrong with the 4-Runner"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Power antenna quit after 5-1/2 years, but was covered under the extended warranty.
One factory recall (rear springs?).
No cost to us.
General comments?
Bought new in '97, this vehicle has been ultra-reliable, and a joy to own. Now on it's 3rd set of tires, but still running original shocks and exhaust.
Love the V6, as it has nice low-end power and acceleration. A little weak on high altitude grades,
but great, overall. Delivers just under 18 m.p.g. in daily suburban driving, and 23+ on the open road.
The short wheelbase with the truck chassis delivers a choppy ride on all
but the smoothest surfaces.
Not a good choice, if one is looking for a cushy ride, but it's OK with me.
Upkeep to date: replaced battery once,
timing belt once, brake job once. One major tune-up. Frequent oil, oil filter, and air filter changes have kept our baby running well.
