1999 Toyota Camry SE review from North America

"It is reliable and efficient, with plenty of room"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Main braking cylinder was replaced under warranty (around 30,000 miles).

Front struts were replaced under warranty (around 30,000 miles).

Alarm system gets triggered if the car is left out in the sun for two-three hours.

Second shift solenoid went out around 190,000 miles and was replaced for about $280.

Developed a small oil leak around rear seal at 190,000 miles (could be fixed for $600).

An A/C compressor started to make whining noise at 2500+ RPM around 200,000 miles. Replacement is around $1000.

A speedometer shows 5% higher speed than it is (you are doing only 76 mph when it says 80) with factory tires.

General comments?

I can't say this car is without problems, however at nearly 220K miles it is still going strong and I hope it lasts me till 300K.

I bought it new. After about a year and a half, my wife reported one time loss in breaking power. I took it to a dealership where they replaced the main break cylinder, even though they didn't find anything wrong with it.

At the same time they replaced front struts since they started rattling a bit.

Following general maintenance (oil change every 5K, timing belt change at 90K and 180K, water pump change at 180K, brake pads every 40-50K) it did not have any serious problems.

I wish the transmission shifted less noticeably, and brakes were more linear, but it's acceptable.

Some minor flaws at this point: few instrumentation light bulbs went out, power windows starting to struggle a bit, power locks starting to stick when locking automatically.

My measurements show that it is still doing 34 mpg on a highway at 70-75 mph. However, due to 5% error in speedometer, it is probably around 30-32 mpg.
