1991 Toyota Camry CSI review from Australia and New Zealand
"A well designed and reliable car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced rotors twice.
Drive shaft problems around the 300,000km mark - cost AUS $1,000 to repair.
Some rust around the window seals (I live near the sea), fixed for around AUS $800.
Air conditioner developed a leak and had to be re-gassed.
Usual consumables: disk pads, alternator bushes, solenoids, batteries and lights.
General comments?
This car is a particularly good design from Toyota and is very reliable.
Please note that this car is not the same as the US for the given year. The picture in this forum shows the "wedge" shaped Camry only available in Australia in the mid 90s.
Its lower height and wider stance (similar to the Cressida) makes it handle quite well around corners. The front-back balance is quite good.
The engine itself has been surprisingly reliable with no mechanical problems whatsoever (now at 420,000km). I always use fully synthetic oil (Mobil 1, Penrite), and to the usual 10k/6mth service, which probably helps it last so long.
My only two criticism is probably a little small by today's standards, particularly if you have tall passengers in the front and back seats, and the dials tend to bend with the heat.
