1986 Toyota Camry from North America - Comments

Original timing belt went at 123k. Around 160k started having problems with coolant system. Other than that just the usual stuff.

Getting ready to hit 200K miles. Maybe it's time for a new car...nah.

I currently own an 86' Camry and have found it to be a very reliable car. I have just hit 290 000km and it is still

mechanically fine. My only problem with the car is that it has started to consume oil quite rapidly. In this case, as of tomorrow I will be removing the engine and doing a engine restoration with a mechanic I work with at a Toyota Dealership. It will involve a set of new piston rings ($90.00), a bearing set ($60.00), a seal and gasket set ($102.00), and for a little extra I am going to port and palish the intake manifold, the head, and the exhaust manifold. In this I hope to have my car running as it was when it came from the factory.

I just bought a 1986 Camry with 94K miles that was owned by a senior citizen since new. It is in near-showroom condition, has always been garaged, and has been impeccably maintained. It looks, runs, and drives like a new car. I still can't believe that I found it for sale and beat all the other potential buyers to it. This car is in good enough condition to have value as a classic car, but I don't think Camrys are considered to be classics in the same way as a 60's Mustang, for example. Anyway, I am also keeping this car garaged and I plan to maintain it in the same condition and will hopefully get many miles of driving pleasure from it.
