Fourth set of rotors for front brakes in >120k miles; air conditioner failure at 70k miles; fourth engine idle control motor in 130k mile ($400 repair each incident) ; 2nd set of motor mounts in <100k miles. (Please note: This car is driven by my fifty year old wife who is a very cautious driver, not Dale Earnhart Jr.)
Today I am replacing – for the third time in 130,000 miles – the engine idle control motor, at a cost of four hundred dollars. This is the fourth such part that has been in the vehicle, and the third that I have had to replace.
The only ‘silver lining’ to this semi-annual expenditure is that I finally encountered a Toyota mechanic who was honest and forthright enough to tell me that the part’s effective life could be greatly extended by an annual service of the throttle body assembly.
The idea that there could be a problem of this magnitude, and not have a single mention of the preventive maintenance procedure in either the vehicle manual or a subsequent technical service bulletin is, in my opinion, completely irresponsible and utterly reprehensible. It is a mystery to me how Toyota Corporation maintains its high rankings for maintenance costs and incidence of repair.
I would never own another Toyota product, and am telling everyone I know that same thing.
After researching a lot, I just have bought a Camry V6 LE, the only problem that is in the car is that the Check Engine light and the ABS light is on all the time. The owner has told me that he went to Toyota dealership and they have said that the problem is only in the sensors and they should be replaced. Do any one out there has the same problem. I know that most of the Camry's have Check engine light ON all the time.
To the original reviewer of this car: You shouldn't lose faith in a great auto company over one lemon, which is most likely what you have. I have a friend who has a 1991 Toyota Camry V6 with nearly 220,000 on it, and it runs better than any domestic car I've ever seen. Or any other car for that matter, with comparable mileage.
First of all, was the car given proper maintenance/service from its previous owners? Not everyone takes time to see what's wrong with their car when they hear a weird noise for the first time. It's understandable that the car gave you a lot of trouble, but what if the car was poorly maintained and that the guy who owned it previous to you drove it like an Off-Road pick up truck with the same oil for 7,000-10,000 miles. this is what I mean.
I am the second owner of a '93 Camry 2.2L/4 cyl with an automatic transmission and 145k miles on it and I would not trade it for the world. The car runs great! The only problem is worn motor mounts, but I'm getting that fixed soon and that doesn't surprise me since I read that the motor mounts were going to be a problem (goes to show you that there are reviews about the cars out there and all you have to do is research really good.) As far as everything goes, it's perfect. The fact that everything in the car is stock and original cannot be put to the side. The only thing not original in the car are the tires and rotors (which I decided to replace, not because they were worn or out of round, but because I wanted better stopping power in the car) and of course the engine fluids etc...
My car is intact and great-looking. Don't assume that if you have a problem w/your car every one else has it. It could be or not.
The level of previous care this car received has little bearing on even the first replacement of the parts involved in these failures. Toyota, I will admit, appears to make some quality vehicles; however I do agree, this is unacceptable. I've never had to replace a part three times, especially considering these were OEM parts from a dealer.
It is annoying to replace the same part 4 times, but it is a '94 and you do have some miles on it. Compared to other cars, you're still doing pretty good in my opinion.
Bought a 1994 Camry in 2000 with just over 64000 miles.
Great, reliable car!
I have over 200000 miles on this puppy.
I had to have only things replaced that go out over time.
Clutch replaced, radiator, starter, water pump and had the timing belt replaced at the same time.
Regular maintenance performed.
I will buy another Toyota.
I have the same year Camry with a V6. It only has 265,000 miles on it.
How many engines and trans?
1994 Camry 2.2.
The best car I have owned.
I have replaced the timimg belt 2 times, rear struts 1 time also had to have front rotors turned down & new pads. About 100,000 miles ago my wife was driving and the engine soft plug heater came out, she drove for five miles to her mother's house. I wasn't a happy camper thinking it probably ruined the engine. Put in a new heater runs as good as ever, I don't have to add any oil between oil changes. I have 205,000 on it now really a well made car.
