1998 Toyota Camry XLE review from North America
"Reliable, smooth and comfortable car."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
So far very happy with this reliable car which I bought used at 83499 km. Replaced a leaking exhaust flex pipe for $160 but a few repair shop wanted to replace the entire catalytic converter assembly for $800. Had the hand brakes lubricated
which was sticking ($50). The rear struts were
replaced at $350. The HVAC bulbs, gear shift bulb and front signal bulbs were all changed myself.
General comments?
If you are looking for a reliable used car look no further as this a recommended car. These generation 4 Camry (97-01) have some problems with engine oil sludge which can be costly, but to avoid this you need to change the oil frequently every 4000 km. The design change (for better emission) causes the oil to heat up higher causing the oil to break down faster. But don't worry if you use synthetic oil which can resolve this. Luckily my car don't have sludge. Other possible problems is with the automatic transmission I heard. Don't spin the wheel if stuck in snow which can wear transmission. Maintenance should be done by replacing ATF fluid and differential fluid every 2 years or 40000 km. to prolong costly repairs. This is an
area often forgotten or where most people don't
know about.
This car is quiet and smooth on the highway and the V6 engine is powerful for passing. Fuel economy is reasonable for V6 (26 mpg average).
The 4 cylinder is better in fuel (28-30 mpg) but
is slower.
Resale value should be very good especially when
compared to all cars that get beyond 200000 km.
(twice or more compared to American cars)
But like all cars one can not ignore regular
maintenance. If you ignore it will cost you
more at the end.
