1996 Toyota Carina E from UK and Ireland - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing after 66k apart from an over-sensitive alarm system (now fixed free of charge).

General comments?

Very reliable large roomy family work horse. A pleasure to drive although I was given a 1.8 litre petrol Carina as a courtesy car during a service and I wasn't impressed with it at all.

Dear Steve,

Your comments on the Toyota Carina E were very good. I have a Carina E 2.0 TD GS. The only problem I'm having is the remote control won't open the doors and when I go to open the doors by using the key, the alarm goes off and the engine gets immobilized and so I'm unable to start the car.

Your survey suggests that this problem can be rectified free of charge. Would I have to take it to any Toyota dealer, or is there some other procedure. Please advise. Thanking you very much.

I've just turned 17, and by luck, I've found an n-reg (96) Carina GLi E. This car is absolutely amazing. It does a cruising speed of 80mph at 3,000 rpm! The red-line is about 6,400, meaning a theoretical top speed of a bit over 160!!! To back this up, there is plenty of low down growl in the engine, up to about 3000, and then the top end takes over, giving a very agreeable push up to the red-line, very smooth all the way through the revs, except at about 3,500 where there is a momentary hiccup till about 3,700. The engine itself is very reliable, 120,000 on the clock, and she still wants more!! The services are quite simple as well, if you take the time to look around the engine and look at the layout and learn about what goes where and does what.

The interior is a bit bland looking, but very comfy and warm. Good for wintertime long distance trips. The only other problem for me is that I am about 6' 2, which leaves not much headroom and legspace for me. But it can be overcome if you just get used to it and don't do a chav at the races impression, where they try to lean into the corners like rossi and crouch up as if they're on a motorbike.

The overall impression I get of this car is that it I want to put a turbocharger in it, get as many performance upgrades in the hood as possible, and enjoy the look on people's faces when they see a dull-looking toyota carina take off like a rocket and vanish.

(There is a lot of car crime and chavs round where I live, that;s why I am so pleased. They won't take a second look because I will not try to disguise it as a Ferrari, and I will keep the stock exhaust. No potential car thieves for me and my little super-car.
