1988 Toyota Celica GTi-16 review from UK and Ireland
"A budget babe magnet!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Some rust spots on the sunroof and driver's front wheelarch (which is not the original).
CV joints click when turning on full lock.
Electric window switches dicky, required contacts cleaning.
Aircon receiver 'sightglass' leaked.
General comments?
I went out looking for a 309 GTi and came back with a Celica. Boy am I glad I did! I have had 3 years of fun out of this car with minimal running cost.
It is a very practical 2+2 with lively performance. The engine is very gutsy and quite economical if driven sensibly. The gearbox is typically Japanese (superb!). The handling is maybe a little soft for a sports car. They benefit from good quality tyres as do most cars.
Try to find genuine workshop manuals as they are absolutely indispensible (and over £100 new!). I found the pair for £15 in my local free ads paper.
