"Great car, would recommend to everyone. better then type-r"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing at all so far!

General comments?

Toyota..word for reliability.

Great car. nice looking, real eye catcher. had celica vvti 140 for a while and was delighted, but this time decided for something with more power. had a choice between civic type-r 2.0 but I really liked more celica. not much difference in power, but celica looks much more special with all the extras you get when you buy t sport. great car to drive, comfortable and quick. when I say quick I mean if you drive hard its fast, revs a lot and for 1.8 engine it is enough. with yamaha developed engine, its bulletproof and you will never have problems, so don't be afraid of hitting the limiter all the time.

I have spent months of narrowing down what car I want next. I eventually narrowed it down to two cars: the last Honda Civic Type R (2001-2006) and the last Toyota Celica 190.

A lot of people moan about engines which have poor low-end torque and don't really get going until 6000+ revs. Well, personally, I love the characteristics of such 'all or nothing' engines, hence the Honda and Toyota. Granted, they're not for everyone, but I love the whole split-personality thing! If I wanted oodles of ever-present torque throughout the whole rev range, then I'd buy the latest £30,000 dull generic modern German diesel super 'sporty' executive saloon or whatever, and feel very smug when I breezed past a CTR or similar at 80mph. Big deal. Mid-range power isn't everything (unless you're a sales rep doing a constant 90mph in a straight line everyday maybe). Oh well, each to their own, but give me a car with personality any day (even if they are just a little bit tacky/boy racer!).

Make sure if you buy a 190 (T-sport or GT) VVTLi that they check the secondary air injector at each service - mine was never checked and ended up costing 800 big ones to replace, all because the yellow engine management warning light came on!

Also ensure they check the alternator and fan belts at each service, as they are notorious on the Celica for excessive wear, even on low mileage cars. Mine has been replaced twice in two years, even though I have only covered 20,000 in that time.

If your car is young enough, it's worth the 500 a year warranty from Toyota.
