1992 Toyota Corolla Deluxe DX review from North America
"Cheap, reliable, and thrifty used car with a lot of spunk"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
After I bought it I found oil in the coolant but after a flush it has not reappeared. $50.
Thermostat went at 130,000 not fixed yet.
Cat back exhaust rotted out at 135,000 but it was the stock one from '92 so I don't fault it for that, $328.
Stock paper speakers crapped out at 120,000, 4 new alpines $130.
Exhaust manifold has a crack and needs replacing at some point only noticeable when the motor is cold.
Struts are on their way out but again they are originals so its expected still keep the car on the road though.
Gas meter is starting to be a little inaccurate I'm losing about a 1/8 of a tank off the top after a fillup but it seems to even itself off after halfway.
General comments?
Bought this car for only $2500 in June of '06.
The 5 speed shifts like new and the 16 year old clutch still catches strong.
Peppy little motor needs to be run above 4000 rpms to have much performance but you can putt around town all day at about 1700 in 5th gear at 35mph. Torque is low enough so that you really don't have to go above 2200 rpms if you don't want to except for highways of course.
Millage is above great, with the close ratio manual I've seen 28 mpg city, (25-30 speed limit)
45ishMPG on rural country roads (35-40 speed) like here in maine.
38-42mpg highway which translates to the 11.5 gallon tank (plus topoff) getting at least 400 miles before your gas light comes on!
Never managed to fit more than 42 bucks of gas in it either and that was at $3.50 a gallon.
Steering is tight still, despite the potholes and frost heaves.
The paint is like new no fading or chipping.
The body is only now showing some signs of rust at the lower rear of the passenger doors nothing a grinder and some bondo can't fix.
Good winter car as long at your tires are good winter or all seasons, the narrow gauge of the wheels can cut through the snow.
My last car was a 17 year old Oldsmobile and it felt like a old car even though it had 30,000 miles less than this little guy I've become such a fan of Toyota after this car 16 years of new england winters, roads, and drivers and it still runs like new.
