1995 Toyota Corolla DX review from North America
"Possibly the best little car ever made."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At 9 years old it had a small leak from the a/c condenser. I replaced it with one from a salvage yard costing $54 and installed it myself without difficulty. I had no prior experience with this type of work. I then recharged it with R134a refrigerant from a retail store (cost $6). It is now 13 years old and the a/c still works great.
Replaced the left front spindle at 225,000 miles for a cost of $94.
I had to replace the right front axle at 250,000 miles for about $120.
General comments?
This car has performed exceptionally well and I expect to drive it to 500,000 miles or more. It is currently at 282,000 miles and runs like a top.
Fuel economy is outstanding. I repeatedly check it and find that highway speeds between 55 and 65 miles per hour result in fuel economy exceeding 40 miles per gallon. At varying speeds on a two lane road trip recently it calculated at 38 miles per gallon.
Operating the a/c does not seem to appreciably affect the vehicle performance, but it does have a small affect.
The transmission is automatic and has had NO servicing or repair and shows no indication that it will ever need it. Outstanding for a car approaching 300,000 miles.
