2005 Toyota Corolla Sport review from North America

"They are good cars"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

About 55,000 miles the check engine light was on, and the dealer replaced a sensor that defective.

At 110,000 miles the check engine went back on, and went back off right after I made an appointment with the dealer.

At 140,000 miles the engine light again, went to the dealer and they diagnosed it. It was a faulty gas cap. As a matter of fact this problem is common for Toyotas (a friend of mine has a 1996 Tercel and has had the same problem). So this problem took 2 weeks to fix because the new gas cap was backordered, however it did not cost anything because the dealer said this was actually recalled.

Nothing else went wrong with the car.

General comments?

This car has been a pleasure to have. I got this car back in May 2005. Since I had it I have been reading reviews on all Corollas, and I found no negative reviews, which I've been amazed.

Before I bought the car I looking into a Hyundai Accent, an Elantra and a Kia Rio. I found the Accent and Rio to be way too small with not enough pickup, and I found out that the Elantra had a poor crash rating (I think the newer ones have better ratings).

I took the Corolla for a test drive right before I bought it. I was really amazed how it handled in both city and highway driving, and right away I wanted the car. Being I said to the salesman I was probably going to keep this car for a while, he offered me an extended warranty which was 7 years/80,000 miles (which I no longer have because I have gone past 80,000) he sold the extended warranty to me for $600. I said wow that's cheap?, I thought it would be another couple of thousand. He said the reason it's cheap because Toyotas are rarely in the shop.

The Corolla is obviously not like a Corvette. This is not a high performance car, so don't you go racing Corvettes with a 1.8 4 cylinder engine with 130hp.

You will also not really find this car to be comfortable, being that it has no leather seats and not a good stereo system. Heck, my car does not even have cruise control, but the Corolla is an extremely reliable vehicle that will be a small case for you of ever getting stuck, and it has excellent gas mileage.
