2001 Toyota Corolla LE review from North America
"It will earn your respect"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Center brake light burned out -- very easy to replace.
Left-rear strut worn out -- cheap fix at local garage.
General comments?
Built to run forever. I bought a very high-mileage 1.8 LE, and at well over 200k miles, it shows no sign of giving up anytime soon. I've driven it everywhere -- from DC to Toronto, to Brooklyn, to Philly, to Connecticut -- and it's never given me any trouble.
The engine is quiet and well-mannered, and stays smooth even at higher rev ranges. However, it doesn't produce much power at high rev ranges, even with VVT-i -- on the highway, you have to keep giving it the whip.
It's a great commuter car (35+ mpg), but there are better choices for long interstate drives. Can't beat it around town. And it's actually pretty fun to drive -- the engine is very light, and the front end isn't weighed down like in a larger car, so the steering response is very precise. The ride is very
good for a compact, even with my well-worn struts.
