This car has been reliable, but at the same time Its got its down falls first of all it's a slug it has very little power it only has a 105hp engine and with the newer cars that came standard with at least 130 the Corolla has a hard time keeping up. Another thing is that the transmission is very harsh and shifts roughly. There is also a loud popping/clunking noise when I let off the gas petal or try to accelerate. Someone said it was the differential on the transmission needing fluid however I can't get to the bolt on the rear of the transmission to check it. When I check the dip stick up top its fine. Besides that the car rides rough. However this is a 1994 car so its got some age on it so I'm not really going to complain to much.
Your transmission shifts roughly because it is a 3 speed automatic. I have a 1994 Corolla DX 1.8 liter with the 4 speed automatic and it shifts super smooth, but the 3 speed always had a problem with harsh shifting, but this is normal on these cars. Every 3 speed Corolla I have driven shifts rather harsh.
You can't expect a car to have excellent gas mileage and lots of power. I agree with the previous comment: automatic trans will always reduce some power, especially when it's only a 3 speed.
