1984 Toyota Corolla SR-5 review from North America

When I bought the car, it was sitting for 10 years prior, so everything that was wrong with the car was a result of that.

-carburetor was badly gummed up and it ran very poorly when I got it, BUT IT DID RUN.

-fuel filter in gas tank was clogged

timing advance was stuck (one click shot with the air compressor and it works great now)

-had to replace most hoses and some belts, but really that's expected after 22 years.

-dashboard and seats were in bad shape.

This car has been a lot of work. The guy that had it before me apparently had never heard of maintenance, but somehow this little beast of a car still runs. When I bought it it had been sitting (with gas in it) for 10 years. IT STILL BURNED THE OLD GAS!! This thing really has been amazing. Even in the worst possible scenario (almost completely clogged fuel lines, gummed up carb, and stuck timing advance) it still RAN!! This car will never fail to get you to your destination.

It took me about a month (had to wait for a new carburetor) before it really ran well. Even then it wasnt running "well" until last week when I found out the timing advance was frozen, but it always did run.

This car has NO RUST whatsoever. Whatever Toyota did to prevent that, WOW! The interior was in bad shape when I bought it, but it is from California, so the sun cooked it to death.

For being 92HP, and getting 38MPG, this thing is decently fast, and it definitely has amazing handling.
