1994 Toyota Corolla DX review from North America
"Excellent car, I paid $2000 and I bet it'll last me years"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Previous owner did the following:
Replaced Starter around 80k miles.
Replaced alternator same time as starter.
Clutch had to be replaced 90k miles (as to be expected), cost her around $900.
I replaced the radiator as soon as I got it, was $100 and a mornings worth of work.
Also the headlamps and shocks I'm getting around to replaced, right lamp is cracked and fogged, suspension is worn out after 127k miles. Lamps will cost me $50 each, suspension will be about $400.
General comments?
Great car, I love it to death. I drive it 70 miles a day, 4 days a week, and rack up maybe 30 miles inbetween. Consistently gets 34mpg, with probally half of my miles highway mileage.
Easy to drive, never once had to make a k-turn inorder to turn around, the car has a small enough wheelbase to make a u-turn on any road.
Manual transmission is nice and simple, and they hold up well. An automatic on cars around this mileage usually shift rough or have trouble finding gears. Plus it's very peppy and eager to go, never have any trouble merging with traffic or getting up to speed at anytime.
After a 2 hour drive in this car, I never get out feeling tired or sore at all. The seats are insanely comfortable while being supportive at the same time.
Car starts up smooth everytime, even during the cold, never have to worry about it breaking down ever.
Clearcoat is faded and there are plenty of scratches and dings on this car, but I didn't get this car for the looks.
I don't know a single person who doesn't like this car. My friend with the '06 civic si loved how simple it was to drive over his car. My friends who drive automatics all want me to teach them to drive. My fathers friends who have all drive better cars love it and know how reliable corollas are. Plus most of them have had a corolla in the past, as it seems to be a lot of peoples first car.
All in all, if you want a cheap car to maintain, get a corolla. Toyota is easily one of the best and most reliable car company in the world, possibly being beaten out only by mercedes and bmw. Everything I could ever want in a first car.
