1983 Toyota Cressida Sedan review from North America
"Probably still a good car for someone who can do a lot of their own work"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The entire A/C system has been replaced at least once and most parts (e.g. condensor, compressor, dryer) 2 or 3 times. A/C system was a major problem with this car.
Radiator has had to be rodded out twice despite semi-annual servicing. Car still seems to run hot during the summer.
Aftermarket mufflers don't last but 20K miles.
Car uses oil now and smokes due to bad valve stem seals and guides and perhaps rings.
Fuel pump went out at 160K miles.
On the third water pump and second alternator which is not uncommon with this mileage.
Starter has been rebuilt twice due to contacts wearing out.
Had to have new transmission shifter bushings as they got so sloppy it wouldn't shift properly.
Had to get the front seat rebuilt.
One window jumped off track but was repaired and now works fine.
Car is about due for front end work as the ball joint covers and tie rod end covers are split.
General comments?
Front seats are not comfortable for longer trips.
This car still makes a good daily driver.
Engine torque is not until higher rpm's (3000 rpm), in the range that isn't used much around town. However, if you push the pedal down this engine wakes up quickly and gets up and goes.
Expect about 22 mpg tops as this is a heavy car.
