1987 Toyota Cressida GLX-i review from Australia and New Zealand

"Buy one, love it, cherish it, and never sell it"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

On low speed takeoff, there is a slight drive-shaft vibration. This occurs between 0 and 30 km/h, but then goes away after that, and the car becomes

beautifully smooth.

My dad owned the car before me, and the

problem has been there for about the last 80000 km. It does not appear to have worsened or caused any trouble.

The drivers side boot catch is busted, the bonnet needs a plank of wood to stay up, and the power steering is a little hard at times.

General comments?

For a car of this age, it is absolutely incredible. They are only very minor things that are wrong with it... superficial things really. There is no rust and the engine and transmission are both in fantastic condition. Washed, waxed and polished as I do, the car looks fantastic, like new.

The car is in far, far better condition than most other cars of the same age, and even less mileage.

The car has been driven a lot, 350-450 k's per week, including stop-start traffic, freeway driving, windy roads etc. It remains as smooth as ever.

The engine is still very powerful, about 9.6 seconds to 100 km/h, and I have beaten much newer model lancers, excels.

Nothing like a smooth 6 cylinder engine with a 6500 rpm redline... far superior to the 5000 on early 90's Falcons/Fairmonts.

The fuel consumption is high, but not an issue as the reliability, luxury and comfort more than makes up for it.

There are very few Cressidas for sale and I doubt there will ever be a car like it again. There will still be many around in ten years from now, people just don't sell them.

I probably will still have mine.
