1987 Toyota Cressida GLX-i review from Australia and New Zealand

"Bargain luxury motoring on a budget"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Right rear wheel bearing needs replacing now.

Rear brake pads also due for replacement.

Rear shocks and springs have evidently been replaced before I bought the car.

Starter motor has been replaced by previous owner.

Both A pillars have slight rust that needs attention.

Front of sump gasket is seeping.

Water pump which looks like it has been replaced before will need replacing soon - evidence of seepage.

One heater hose has been replaced, another under the inlet manifold looks to be in need of replacing soon.

Tail shaft appears to have ben replaced in the past - magnet from cruise control is missing - perhaps the reason why the CC doesn't work.

Rear parcel shelf is a bit weathered from sun.

Dash is a little bit deformed on each side of the gauge binnacle, shows up as slight gaps on the remote radio controls and the electric mirror control. Not a big fault considering the age of car.

General comments?

I bought this car after one quick drive around the block. as it was so smooth and free of noises.

For a 87 model this car is amazing, the interior is in fantastic condition, no rips or tears or fading.

The exterior is free of rust except in the aforementioned A pillars.

Considering the mileage the transmission and engine are in great shape, smooth fuss free acceleration.

All electrics work, no apparent water leaks into cabin or boot.

Paid $2000 for what was originally a $37,000 car - what a bargain.

I have spoken to numerous mechanics and parts guys and everyone said they are solid reliable cars, I wasn't looking for a Toyota, but am glad we got this. Its not as smooth and swift as our 93 VQ Statesman, but its not really a step backwards as all the comforts are there, and with better economoy and build quality, plus the paint looks great.
