The central door lock broke down in the first month.
Cannot support fast shifting.
Nice top speed for a multi purpose vehicle.
The cabin is comfortable.
The comfort facilities are poor.
All that I know, Kijang is built based on a Light Utility Vehicle for the third world, cheap yet fairly reliable. The technology goes back to late 60's, 4 in-line and rear wheel drive. But after it sold great in the first years of launching (1977) Toyota appointed a new scheme to face-lifted the penalty-box into a more van-like in the mid 80's. The metamorphosis never been smooth that while keeping the easy maintenance concept, they also have to support market demand for a more fancy car. If you want a kijang to perform great, just buy a RAV4 then put kijangs' badge on it. You;ll gonna love your new Kijang.
I own a Toyota Kijang 1.8, or here in Malaysia it's known as the Unser 1.8. I couldn't agree more with you, its ride is uncomfortable, but its reliability is awesome. I ran a food business so my Kijang/Unser are used 110% and haven't let me down.
Only problem right now is the starter; it needs to change once a year due to the heat from the extractor, but I think that's my fault cause I've change the extractor and the center bullet and the silencer (changed it back to standard cause it's a bit noisy, even when idling). The rest of the car is okay, nothing major to fix.
By the way, my Unser is a secondhand unit, not a new one. That's saying a lot for its reliability.
