1982 Toyota Landcruiser G review from Australia and New Zealand

"Not a 4wd just designed for shopping"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Alternator brushes needed replacing at 320,000 km. Cheap to fix.

Starter motor currently playing up, probably needs brushes.

Small radiator leak at 275,000 km, had it soldered.

Small front differential leak, easily fixed.

Most recent repair of any significance has been a leaking power steering pump. It needed new seals, which were surprisingly affordable, only the mechanic took 5 hours to fix it.

Air conditioning needs a few new parts and is not operational at this moment. I'll get it fixed before summer, I love my air con.

All other repairs have just been run of the mill maintenance issues, like brake pads etc.

General comments?

This is a car that can be summed up in two words: 'tough' and 'reliable'.

The reason I am confronted with for example aircon and power steering repairs is that out of its approx. 360,000 km probably 260,000 were done driving on rough roads or tracks in hot and sometimes tropical conditions.

This car has never let me down, oh sorry only once here in town when the clutch went, however things wear out on any car if you keep on driving them long enough.

The HJ60 diesel motor is one of the toughest units ever built, simple, without any electronics. I've driven through rivers in it, with water over the bonnet - it keeps on running.

Finally I'd like to say: when I bought my Cruiser a mechanic told me that at 260,000 the car was 'just run in, mate!'
