It did not run when I bought it, but after some work and about $700 it is a great truck. It has some burns on the seat from some idiot shooting a 22 from inside it. I had a buddy with a 1980 Toyota just like it and his second gear went out on the transmission. He went to get a new one and they told him that in 1980 they changed the bolt pattern on the 20R engine and transmission and that the 2nd gear is known to go bad. In 1981 they came out with the 22R with a different bolt pattern. Therefore, only a 1980 engine and transmission will fit together.
Luckily my transmission is still good, but I don't know what I'll do if it goes bad. Other than that the truck runs great and I haven't had any problems. The truck handles great off road and has a frame like a tank.
My name is Chris. I have a 1980 Toyota 4wd with the 20R engine. It is a very reliable truck. The only thing that is wrong with mine, is when I took it to a mechanic, he took the carburetor off and was going to replace my vacuum lines without me knowing about it. He took them off, and couldn't remember where they belonged. I have some of the vacuum lines where they belong, or at least I think, because it runs, but there are still some missing. So if you have any info or pictures on where they go, please e-mail me at viper_620@hotmail.com or at greesemonkey_88@hotmail.com.
Thank you for reading this and I hope you can help me fix my truck.
Sorry, but the bolt pattern is the same. I don't know who told you that it was different, but they didn't know what there talking about. I just dropped a 1994 22re into a 1980 that had a 20r. We didn't have to change out the 4 speed trany, it fit up fine.
I'm looking into buying a Toyota for four-wheeling. I was looking into the 85's because of the solid front Axel and fuel injection, but they are really hard to find. I recently found an 80' but I'm not sure if they are as reliable as the 85's. Also the 1980 needs probably a whole new engine. I know the 1980 trucks came with a 20r, but I was wondering if I could put a 22re in it so I could have fuel injection. If anyone can help please write back.
I have a 20R in a 1985 Toyota pickup that had a 22R in it a little bit of manifold change over works good, but need to know the vacuum hoses still have not figure that out yet if any one can help me email me at metalgear3368@yahoo.com.
