1989 Toyota MR2 review from UK and Ireland
"Eats GTi's for breakfast"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Only had the car a few months, and done 3000 miles - so not much chance of anything going wrong.
Handling in the wet was scary when I got the car - that was solved by adding a set of TOYO Proxes T1-S tyres.
The original speakers sounded a bit tinny, so I replaced them almost as soon as I got the car.
General comments?
Bought my MR2 for a shade under £2000. Its red with 15inch 5 spoke alloys.
I have (at times) driven this car very hard and found that you have to be driving like a total maniac to get it to loose grip. Easily out-handles any car I have owned in the past.
At first I didn't think the car was as fast as I thought it should be. That was until I wound it up over 4500rpm, after that the car almost takes off.
I haven't had the car serviced or repaired yet so I can't comment on running costs, except for the fuel consumption which I recorded at 33mpg.
Right, fantastic car, great handling and speed, looks stunning, but there are a couple of annoyances:
1. I find the car a bit short on space. Although the leg and head room is good, the boot space is poor (couldn't even fit a crate of lager in it), and the door pockets can just about hold a CD.
2. Motorway journeys can get a bit of a headache. The engine is spinning around 4000rpm at 70mph.
So my summary of the car: if you want a good looking fast car with great handling, you are not bothered about boot space, and don't use motorways much, then this is the car for you.
