1992 Toyota Paseo review from North America
"This car is a little gem I got for $800"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced Water Pump at about 160,000 miles.
Also had minor work done on fusebox at that time, previous owner had jammed a foiled fuse into the box and ultimately caused a meltage that had to be repaired.
Replaced *original* Clutch & Pressure plate, throwout bearing et al at about 180,000 miles.
Replaced original Front struts at about 210,000 miles.
Uses a little oil now. Put engine honey in once every six months to help keep the seals tighter etc.
Drivers seat has a tear on the side from getting in and out so much... I could repair this easily, I just haven't gotten around to it.
A semi backed into me a little over a year ago at a traffic light and crushed the whole front end assembly. The Dealership did all the repairs paid by the semi's insurance, but they missed the crack in the front shield under the car. This eventually broke in half and began to drag... so now it's held together with duct tape. (not visible, no big deal)
Washer fluid pump has never worked since I had the car.. I keep fluid in a handy spray bottle, but recently was told that the pump is neither expensive, nor hard to install so maybe I'll fix it.
Speedometer gets whacked out when it's really cold and won't register correctly at speeds over about 40 mph until the car warms up. Simple solution... let the car warm up... it's 13 years old and has nearly a quarter of a million miles on it.
Air could work better, but I prefer the 2-50 air better anyway. Probably just needs a recharge, but not worth it to me considering how little I use it.
General comments?
This has been such an awesome little car to me.
I gave it a party when we hit 200,000 miles. It will get another one when we get to 250,000 miles.
It still starts first time every time unless it has been sitting for a couple of weeks, and then sometimes I have to start it twice, but then it's fine once it gets going.
Corners like a sports car. Low ride, close to the ground. I love it. Good peppy power for such a small engine.
I can't say it enough, I love this little car. I will probably never get rid of it... have even considered starting a fund now to replace the engine when it does finally go. At the moment though it still runs smooth as silk... just watch the oil, put a little honey in twice a year and all is good.
I wave at all other Paseos I encounter on the road... they probably think I'm nuts.
