I have the oppurtunity to purchase a 1989 toyota pickup x-tra cab 22re 2wd. I was about to buy it, but my dad recommended me have it checked through with a mechanic first. I got approval from the owner to do so. I let him look at it and he said there is some under body frame rust in the back were it connects to the leaf spring. he said this is a hazard and might give on a harsh bump or crumble in collision It however has new exhust and brake lines. plus new tires. it is a 5 speed manual and the test drive it was great. drove like a champ! he wants 300$ for it and it is mechanically sound. what is your guys take on my opportunity and would you recommend not be taken off road and on harsh conditions. also how does it do in the snow, and what is the 0-60 time. could it beat a volvo 240 station wagon 89 2wd auto with a 2.3 4 cyl non-turbo in a drag race. thanks for ur imput!
With $300? Better buy the truck.
Can't go wrong for 300 clams. I have a 94 2WD and it's been perfect. It's a 2WD, so why take it off road? Just drive it and enjoy it. Yes, it'll spank the Volvo, but it'll also get great mileage if you drive it sanely. The 22RE motor is bulletproof.
Uhmm I recently drove a 1989 toyota 4x4 ext cab. beautiful truck.. but it was really abused in the dunes of mojave and it's been completely sunk in a pond.. none of which was my fault.. I had the truck for two years and it was the best truck I've ever had. And yes it does amazing in the snow 2wd and 4wd. also over rocks. I've taken it through the hummer trails in spring mills pennsylvania. and she did wonderful. I had 31/10.5s' on it. and rode beautiful and smooth. only probs I had was entire fuel system needed replaced and my battery always went dead.. but all in all it's a beautiful truck. congrats. my mom sold mine about 6 months ago for a 95 mustang. And ugh I hate cars, but hey, and yes it should beat that station wagon.. I didn't have any major mods done on mine. and I beat a 07 celica gt, a 67 chevy, and some dudes bronco... Ha if I could have her back.. hmm good times.
Congrats on the truck. Good luck with it.
