2001 Toyota Previa GLS review from UK and Ireland
"Unrivalled practical space, easy to drive and reliable - the best people-carrier available"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Not so much as a blown bulb!
General comments?
Looks as cool as a people-carrier can. The sliding doors are superb. Good-looking inside too, if you can see past the grey.
More "boot" space than the Grand Espace or the Grand Voyager when all seats are in place makes it the only choice if you need to occupy 3 rows of seats and carry some luggage too. Galaxy clones don't even come close. Very roomy and comfortable for passengers too, with lots of cubby-holes to store stuff. There is a trick to removing the rear seats, and if successful you are rewarded by a truly cavernous load space.
Pleasant and effortless to drive normally, but with the 2.4VVTi engine, you will need to get above 4000rpm if you feel like more torque. It's extremely well-behaved round corners, but (here's a surprise) couldn't be said to have an entertaining chassis and I doubt the Galaxy is really much better if you read an unbiased review.
The smaller Toyota Picnic was Euro NCAP crash test scored at the then maximum 4 stars, so I would hope the Previa is as good, but there aren't any side airbags and the middle seat in the middle row does not have a 3 point seat restraint. The brakes are very good and need to be for the bulk of vehicle they help preserve.
It's quite expensive to buy and fuel economy is only fair, but service interval is 10000 miles and with Toyota reliability it really has no competitors if you can afford one. The GLS is particularly good value with the captain's seats, CD and cruise control to the fore and the individual seats and ventilation controls aft.
