1990 Toyota Previa LX review from North America
"Incredibly sturdy and reliable"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator died twice, once at 170000 KM and again at 430000.
Had to replace the catalytic converter twice. At 210000 KM and 400000 KM.
When new the original alternator emitted a strange whistling noise, they could not find the source of the noise. A mechanic in an independent service center found the problem was the alternator.
Battery died at 210000 KM with the alternator.
The car is now very noisy to drive.
The rear coil springs gave up at around 245000 KM.
The shocks had to be replaced twice.
The blower fan died twice.
The front struts top plates are damaged, causing the vehicule to be unstable.
The clutch on this manual transmission died at 510000 KM.
The air conditioning compressor died at 345000 KM.
General comments?
Great car, handled the extensive abuse of canadian winters, 4 15" subwoofers, offroading and racing extremely well.
514183 KM on the engine and transmission.
The clutch repair was caused by extensive downshifting with the vehicule.
The thing runs, don't ask me how it still does so, but it does... the engine has constantly been running high RPM on acceleration in the past year of it's racing career, often hitting it's cutoff.
A pleasure to drive, you feel like the king of the road, fun to outperform civics with this manual van.
