2001 Toyota Sequoia sr5 review from North America

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rear window regulator seized up and broke the tab off of the rear lift gate window.resulting in my having to purchase a new rear window and regulator. (I live in wisconsin and they salt the roads, and the regulator and tracks that support the window rusted so badly that it obviously became inoperable. I repaired it myself by sourcing the regulator online and the glass from an auto glass repair shop (129.00 verses the 400.00 the dealer was going to charge just for the glass) I was able to repair it in about 3 hours with a socket wrench a screwdriver and some profanity. What concerns me is that the replacment doesn't look like its going to last more than 5years like the last one (coated in the same crap as cheap nails). now my drivers window is starting to sound rough so I guess I can expect to do the same for that one. Also the power antenna has never worked when it gets below 40deg outside. Rear gate latch has also been a problem (sticks). I have not had any major problems all in all, just some annoyances. I guess I have been pretty lucky compared to others (problems).I'm not sure if I would purchase a newer model because it seem as though the amount of problems increase each new model year. I'm stuck with this one for 3 1/2 more years and I think I have gotten to know its weak spots. One other thing, If the 4wd does not disengage when you push the button on the dash (for a day or so) get under it and lightly tap (with a hammer) on the trans housing where the actuator rod is,make sure you have a repair manual so you know what and where you are tapping. I know it sounds stupid, but if the 4wd is seldom used, the rod sticks. So make sure you use the 4wd at least one time every 2 months for a min. of 10 miles and you shouldnt have a problem. Try it before you take it in to the dealer. And always remember to start with the cheapest and easiest solutions before you assume that it's a major mechanical failure.

All in all I love this truck! I hope that this may have been some help. Shawn Pickard
