"Rare mix of performance and reliability"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Worn clutch replaced.

Damaged wheel.

Some cracked hoses replaced.

Warped rotors replaced.

General comments?

I live in Thailand where the taxes are very high on most automobiles, especially luxury cars. There is also the issue of relatively weak dealer networks, especially for cars that are uncommon in the country. So when I decided to look for a sports car, my choices rapidly shrank to a few cars.

Eventually I settled on a Supra that had been imported from the UK in 1997 and had some cosmetic and minor engine modifications done. The car was in fairly bad shape when I bought it last year (for, brace yourself, US$42,000) in terms of maintenance. Clutch was gone, rotors badly warped, alignment off, brake balance off, turbo boost adjuster not functional, one speaker blown. The country has a well-run TRD garage where I had all work done. Not cheap and not fast, but dependable- a relative rarity here.

I wound up selling the car recently after owning it for a year. Problem was that the traffic is so bad in Bangkok, and my work takes up so much of my time, that I rarely had a chance to drive it. The battery would go flat and not have much of a chance to charge up with all of my short driving trips around the city. It was also not a very comfortable car to drive with the sometimes very poor condition of the roads. Even the TRD owner admitted to having broken two wheels on two separate occasions when driving over large metal sheets in the road used to cover holes or roadworks.

When out and about, especially outside of the city, the car certainly got a lot of looks. There are approximately 80-120 Supras in Thailand right now so one can expect a lot of attention. With the modifications made (larger intercooler, exhaust, intake, a few things) I was able to keep up with and pass Ferrari F355s, much to the chagrin of their owners. The engines, if not massaged too heavily, are virtually bulletproof and Toyota reliability is intact.

All in all a great car. I just didn't have the time or the playing space to give it.

Take your supra to "the world street nationals" and race with 200 mph 1/4 mile street legal cars. Or sell your so called sports car and buy a 2005 corvette. It's 186 mhp, 0-60 in 4 sec and it's all stock. Don't ned to spend anymore money to make it fast, unlike your supra. over here in the USA, supra are for teenagers. Get real and get a real sportscar with a v8 or v10 or v12 engines.

Actually, Supras are not for teenagers. At a national Supra meet in Orlando, Florida, there were many Supras that made over 1000 hp. In fact, some Supras there beat a Lamborgini Murcialago, which is equipped with a 487 hp v12. There is something to be said about a car that is so well-designed that it only needs half the engine to get astounding levels of horsepower.

What are you talking about? Supras...teenages? No way I don't know last time I saw a teenager with a twin-turbo under their bonnet! It is a well known fact that for the type of car that the corvette is TRYING to be, the build quality is rubbish! + you're wrong; most teenagers in the US who are into cars mainly have Civics and Preludes or alike! Please don't unjustly bring down the Supra.

My son drives a Supra tt. I bought it for him. Yes, he wears a bonnet- he's a teen. I drive a viper- the supra tt is no match. And yes, I live here in the USA.

Each to their own. not everyone is a rich spoilt little brat with a rich dad to buy them a supra in their teenage years, and not everyone likes the cubes, it's only an extension to make up for what mother nature failed to endow. if you don't like supras there's no need to dis it here, you're here for a reason, maybe you got you corvette spanked good by a japanese import, and your here to vent some fume, or your jealous that our good old american muscle is really not up there with the tech wiz of the imports. some people realize that not everything in the automotive world revolves around displacement. technlogy keeps revolving, and there's there's no need to dis. I like our local muscle cars and the imports for what they are. learn to appreciate.

Over here in the USA only teens race on the Street. Adults take their cars on the race track. Now those teens can't compete with people who has money. When Supra first came out- adults checked it out and tried it on the track- slalom and straight. The result was very disappointing. Money was spent and the modified supra TT is no match with the big boys. So that's why the supra was rejected for pro racing. It's only good for the " fast and furious crowd" like you. So don't race on the street because you might run over your mother or sister, or sister's friends...etc...Supra's are for immature teens.
