2002 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab from North America - Comments

"It's a shame I have to sue Toyota to take it back or replace it due to the axle wrap problems."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have had the truck back to the service department for axle wrap five times. The dealer has worked very hard to correct this problem. I believe it is an engineering problem. It looks like I may have to hire a lemon law lawyer to get my money back as the Toyota Customer Support folks now say all Tacoma's do this and it is not a problem. It does seen odd that they have spent several thousand dollars attempting to repair it if it is normal.

General comments?

The truck is slightly under powered. This becomes evident when towing, even a light weight trailer, 1700 lbs up any kind of grade.

Gas mileage is twenty plus while driving seventy five miles per hour on the freeway.

The rear seats are as big or bigger than most cars back seats. Perfect for my family.

The double cab portion of the truck at certain angles looks odd and ill designed. I think that the rear set of windows sweep upward too aggressively making the side of the truck (profile) appear large, flat and plain looking.

From the rear, the cab has a slight bubble like look. Although the overall looks are pretty good.

Radio and CD player are just below average in sound quality although the controls are very simple, well thought out and easy to use.

The fit and finish of exterior and interior are superior to other mini crew cab trucks that I test drove prior to buying the Toyota.

Hi, I own a 2004 Pre-Runner quad cab with the same problem of axle wrap. Everytime the brakes are applied and the vehicle comes to a complete stop, I feel that I have been rear ended. I have been to the dealer 3 times for the same problem. I have had a technical field tech look at the vehicle. He said it is normal for the vehicle, but they still do things to repair it. I asked him if it is normal, then why repair it. He had no answer for me. I have talked with several owners of these trucks and some say they have this problem and some say they don't have any problems with these trucks. I am currently in a fight with Toyota over this vehicle. I have owned Toyota's for over 15 years and the quality of the vehicle design has gone from really great to really poor.

I noticed the axle wrap problem after purchasing my new Double Cab in 2002. Yes, upon stopping it sometimes felt as if I was being hit from behind. I changed the gear oil in the rear differential and transfer case with synthetic about 3 years ago, and have not had the problem since.
