1993 Toyota Tercel review from North America
"A cheap, fun, and reliable commuter"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The cv boot went bad and required me to have the front axle replaced for $75.
Air conditioner went out ($600) -previous owner did not ever turn on so all the gaskets went bad.
General comments?
The car is an excellent commuter.
I used to have a '92 tercel and I absolutely abused that car on gravel roads... it never quit.
It is a simple vehicle to own and has great performance and value.
It is not a great car to own if you only have one vehicle. I own a Montero and use the tercel to drive around town and commute to work. It is hard to imagine a better car for this purpose.
I never have to worry about toyota reliability. I have owned 4 toyotas and they have all been 100% dependable in all situations. I only hope that my mitsubishi is half as reliable as one of my toyotas.
A k&n filter and performance exhaust make a huge difference in perfomance. The parts are inexpensive as well. It would be a fun car to really tweak up some hp.
If you have a need for a cheap commuter, get the tercel. It is a decision that you will never regret. it has little physical appeal, but you will be able to spend more on your dates with all the money you save running this car.
