1989 Toyota Tercel Coupe review from North America
"Great investment, I think I got my money's worth"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Have gone through 3 mufflers, 4 sets of tires, one starter, only 2 or 3 headlight bulbs, 3 batteries, one set of front disk pads and one set of rear drum shoes. Not bad for a car that I've owned for 16 years. Lifetime replacement on the mufflers.
There is some problem with the way water drains around the trunk, always wind up with some water in the spare tire cavity which now shows surface rust.
General comments?
Regular oil changes with Mobil 1 used from 8,000 miles to 85,000 miles; presently use valveline oil for older vehicles - doesn't burn oil.
The car still has the original clutch and I have regularly towed small trailers with the car.
Always used seat covers, so the seats are still in great shape.
No accidents with the vehicle and I have never been stopped by police while driving it. Body has minor dings and scratches, but still looks good.
Bought studded snow tires for the car in '88 and only put them on when needed - 10 to 14 days a year in Oregon (including ski trips to Mt Hood) ; still using them.
