1991 Toyota Tercel DX review from North America

"O.K. power, size, and mileage for the price"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Possible CV joints or axle going bad.

Some small oil consumption. About a quart every 600 miles.

General comments?

I filled the tank and drove the car for 50 miles and it's gone from the top side of the full mark to the bottom side of the full mark. That's hardly anything.

At first driving it felt fairly gutless, but once I learned to spool up the engine a bit before releasing the clutch (basically learned to drive THIS car) it's got a good amount of power for an econo-box. It even does ok on the hills here in Seattle.

The seats aren't painfull or anything. Just not cozy. I would defenantly not want to drive this car for over an hour straight without maybe getting some better seats, or pads, or something. :) The previous owner had taken VERY good care of the interior so the seats are in nearly mint condition.

Oil Leaks in these Tercel's are due to Valve Stem Seals. I read all the reviews here about oil leaks, then researched they why's and hows online. It seems to fix the oil leak you need to change all 12 of the Valve Stem Seals. They cost roughly five dollars each from what I've heard. But to get to them you need to remove the timing belt, so you may as well change the belt while you're at it too. I think it would be VERY expensive to take it into a garage to do, but well under $200 in parts to replace the seals, timing belt, and valve cover gasket yourself if your skilled enough to do so.

I haven't had the car for long, but other than a very low rumble wich I think may be the CV joints, I'm VERY happy with the car, even being nearly 15 years old.
