70300 miles on my 2000 tundra and they, as I write this, are putting the 8th set of front rotors on, UNDER Warranty. Not without a fight though.
My disappointment with Toyota is without bounds. The brakes on the Tundra are a disgrace to the Toyota reputation. The way they will deny the problems with the braking system publicly and then take you aside and advise you to get out from under it because they don't know how long they will support fixing the brakes is appalling. There should be a recall to correct this flaw in an otherwise good looking well performing truck.
I agree 110% with your brake problems. I too have a 2000 limited that needs a brake job every 5,000 miles. I am out of warranty and am SICK of the excuses too! I just want my truck to stop and not shake apart in the process. I will not purchase any Toyota product in the future because this is obviously a manufacturer defect. It is a safety issue!!...furious!!!
Join the club, spent $800+ to date and latest TSB requires that I spend $1600+ for new rotors, calipers, pads, etc. without guarantee of a solution. How did you get Toyota to cover when out of warranty. I have written letters, complained to NHTSA, etc. without any results. Maybe we need a class action lawsuit to resolve the problems. It is also that not all 2000 models are affected by the brake virbration problem.
I also have a 2000 Toyota Tundra SR5, when I apply the brakes the whole truck feels like its going to fall apart!
Is there any remedy to this problem?
I too have the brake vibration problem on a 2000 Tundra SR5. I bought the truck used and within 3k miles, I noticed the vibration. Took into Toyota and had the rotors resurfaced. 5k miles later, I took it in again. My service guy advised me to leave the truck with him and that Toyota would replace the entire braking assembly for free. Then he came back and said no, but they would resurface again and replace the pads for $50. I agreed. 1000 miles later and I'm starting to notice the problem again. Now I'm reading this and I'm outraged. I am writing a letter to Toyota and I advise others to do the same. This is unbelievable.
I have a 2000 Tundra Limited with 15K on it - my breaks are at 10%!! The dealer said that he will replace them under the warranty this time. My lease is over next year, so I should be OK, but this should be a recall. I do not have the same viabration problem, but there is clearly an issue with the design/implementation of the breaks.
I have a 2000 Tundra that bounces down the highway when I brake at 50+ mph. Without knowing that this was a Tundra wide problem, at about 38k miles I had a complete front brake job (at a Goodyear store) which barely made it better. I'm not about to spend any money on getting it fixed because from all that I recently read, nobody seems to be confident that the problem will not come back. When I e-mailed Toyota they responded that they were unable to help with the cost of repairs because my mileage exceeded the warranty. I responded to them by saying that "NO, you ARE able to help, you DON'T want to help..." The injustice here is that I feel confident that Toyota was well aware of their brake problems well before my warranty ran out and they failed to notify me which they morally should have done. They never have a problem finding me when they want to sell me a new car.
I have a 2002 Tundra with 20,000 miles and it also has had the shaking brake problem. Toyota just replaced the rotors, calipers and other assorted parts that go along with this fix. this seems to have fix it so far. how ever they did want to charge me $45 to do a brake inspection. I complained to my sevice person and they reduced it to $24. the truck is a good vehicle it just the dealer that makes the whole thing unbearable.
I am the manager of a small business with a fleet of Tundras, from 2000-2003, we have 3 trucks affected by the brake problem, one model year 2000, two model year 2001, after being told we were "out of the warranty period" on one and that since we haven't "registered any official complaints" on the others we weren't covered. We took it above the dealer level to Toyota of America, and low and behold, they are covering the 2001's and we pay $300 labor on the 2000. All trucks will now get the Toyota Technical Service Bulletin total brake overhaul/replacement. Smart move by Toyota, they were about to lose a good and loyal customer!
I also have a tundra 2002 and after one month I had an accident.the truck just didn't stop like it should of. one year later I find out that the trucks brakes are defective and where replaced for free all of it calipers rotors pads. my shocks are also leaking and the dealer said its probably from the accident and won't replace them.all leak, all mybraks continue to need to be ajusted every 5000 miles.every month.rediculous.and it still drifts to the left on the fwy and thay just don't do anything... GUS WINDS 310-391-9069 IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER CONCERNS MAYBE TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THIS PROBLEM.
I have a 2003 tundra and have had to replace the brake pads 3 times already and I have only 8800 mile on the truck First ones replaced at 3491 with back shoes having to be fixed also. Next set at 6500 then again at 8011 to keep from getting in the rotors. They say its related to my job as I am a mail carrier, but having a ford and a nissan before this one I never cam across this problem Can anyone help me get this problem figured out. I thought ford was a headache, but seems like toyota has them beat on the brake problems, but other than that I like the truck. They say Its because it weighs so more than the other 2 trucks, but they should have thought of that when they made it. It still has to stop. Please help me Sheila.
Well, I hate to be the odd man out, but my 2002 SR5 Tundra has been ROCK SOLID. No problems with the brakes to date (approx 24k miles). I had a std small 4cy Toyota before this one with 130k on the original rotors and they were still going strong. I drive my truck like a truck, not like a car, so I don't do a lot of slam on the brakes kinda things that most people seem to do. Though in my old Toyota I was known to do power slides (which is why it had drum problems in the rear). Again, just sorry to hear people are having problems.
Are "power slides" part of "driving a truck like a truck"?!? Seriously though, I have been shopping for a Tundra for the last 2 months, but am now having some serious doubts. I want and need a truck, but it looks my choice wasn't as clear cut as I had hoped.
I recently replaced the rotors on my 2000 Tundra at 40,000 miles, after they had been resurfaced once by the dealer. I was not aware that this was a common problem until I researched the rotor prices on line to verify that my mechanic charged a fair price. Tundra owners need to put the pressure on Toyota to provide a solution to this problem. It is tarnishing the reputation of an otherwise great truck.
In May of 2003I bought a new Toyota Tundra because I was told by Toyota that they had a new braking system and that the problem was fixed. At 12000 miles, yes I drive a lot, that is why I bought a Toyota in the first place, I had my brake and rotors replaced by Toyota under warranty. I now have 20,000 miles and took it to Toyota and they refused to do anything and said it was my fault for being to hard on them. After selling my T-100 with 250,000 miles on it and very few brake jobs I think it was a big mistake to buy one of these pieces of junk. It sad to think a company like Toyota would do this to us customers. It will be my last.
My parents have a 2000 SR5 Tundra and I am tired of every time I drive it, I tend to lose control of the steering wheel because of the outrageous vibration on the steering wheel, I Don't FEEL SAFE. I have read all your comments and to be honest I don't know what to do. I think I am going to contact Toyota and try to talk to them about the problems with their brakes and let them know that if this is not fix appropriately I will get a lawyer let him read all this complaints and take further actions from there. Our truck is still under warranty, after reading your comments I want to see what will happen. Another thing a friend of mine has a 97 4runner and his always having brake problems, every 3 months its taken to pep boys to take care of the shaking. WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, we need to try everything possible including the media.
