Replaced the transmission at 350000 km
this was a 2 hour job with a $300 transmission from a auto wrecker.
Replaced alternator.
Replaced fuel filter (ugly job!), front brake pads, thermostat, belts, etc.
Overall excellent vehicle. Other than very annoying idiot lights going on and off with nothing actually wrong, very reliable. I use it as a commuter car (90 km 6 days a week). It can be interesting to drive in a wind storm, but a firm grip and remembering not to over correct and it is no problem. Turns on a dime. Has a incredible knack for catching rock chips on the front windshield! Gets great gas mileage on flat terrain (30+ MPG). I plan to drive it over 600000 km. and beyond.
I bought a 1987 4x4 van about 6 years ago. Mine has about 200,000 miles on it now. Except for the a/c (it has never work as long as I have owned it and I have spent a bucket full of money on that a/c unit) It has never giving me trouble untell now. I seem to have developed a gas leak into my coolant. I'm in the process of finding that leak. The head is back from the machine shop and no leaks were found. I have own a toyota mini van since 1997( that one was a 1985) and hope to go many more years. It's the best cars I have owned and I love them. I will drive one for as long is I can. the two cars I wish would come back is this van and the early beetle not the new one.
