2002 Vauxhall Astra SRi review from UK and Ireland
"Cheap, reliable and fast"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Crankshaft sensor failed, but was cheap to replace (£80 incl fitting).
General comments?
This car is comfortable on long journeys with a good driving position, the seats are very good, better than the later Astra's (mk 5) and the aircon works well even after 7 years.
The performance is a mixture of good and bad, the straight line acceleration from the 190 bhp engine is very satisfying, and I expect it can get to the top speed of 150 mph quickly. The handling is good too with very little or no understeer, but what lets the car down is the over-active traction control, which cuts the power very aggressively, and there's no button to switch this off except on the later GSi model.
The car looks great; mine is black, and the 17 inch alloys and large rear wing help it to stand out compared to other models.
I would buy another one of these, although would recommend the GSi so you can turn off the T/C. Also the GSi is much more common as they only made 500 SRi Turbos.
