1998 Vauxhall Astra SRi review from UK and Ireland
"A total lemon, but is fantastic between faults"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Oil needed topping up every 500 miles. This went on for a year before they finally found the valve stem seals had gone.
Inlet manifold gasket.
Cylinder head gasket.
Cam sensor.
Coolant sensor problems.
Steering column collapsed.
Power steering pump.
Sunroof rails distorted.
Seat tilt cable broke.
Corrosion on both doors.
Squeaky seats.
Main beam freezing on occasionally.
Seat tilt and slide mechanism fault.
Sluggish performance and a flat-spot.
Seat springs require replacing on a recall.
The car has a heavy rattling coming from somewhere within the valve gear. I am awaiting diagnosis on this one.
General comments?
The car looks great.
It drives well occasionally.
All in all the worst car I've owned, yet somehow I still like it.

| Great car, but severely let down by continual unreliability, I won't make the same mistake twice. |
