1998 Vauxhall Astra Sport review from UK and Ireland
"A big boy's toy"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
21,000 miles :- rear shockers failed, put on gas shocks, made one hell of a difference to the handling.
22,000 miles:- bracket on side of engine which holds alternator and power steering pump cracked, replaced under Network Q warranty.
35,089 miles two years old:- water pump seized snapping timing belt, bent all 16 valves, cracked head, bent conrods, damaged barrels, Vauxhall paid for new engine even though out of warranty. Apparently a common problem, I know of 3 people this has happened to.
General comments?
I thought this was a great car even though I had a lot of problems, but my local garage Reg Vardy and Vauxhall sorted everything out for me when it went wrong, that's why I bought a mark 4 version.

| Great car, but severely let down by continual unreliability, I won't make the same mistake twice. |
