1998 Vauxhall Astra LS review from UK and Ireland
"Unexciting but easy to live with and economical to run"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator belt tensioner broke clean off (bolts snapped) - fortunately the car was still under warranty (just).
Central locking broke at two years old (£60 to fix).
Other than this, no other problems (although those two are hardly little niggles!). If it weren't for those two problems then it would have 10/10 for reliability as it has never had engine problems/poor running/failing to start etc.
General comments?
Very unresponsive at low revs but once past 3000 rpm then much better, and once past 4000 then accelerates very well indeed - consequence of 16v I suppose.
Quite happy with the handling. Would get a bigger engine next time so it wouldn't need to be thrashed so much and wouldn't need quite so much gear changing.
Not exciting but much better than an Escort!!

| Great car, but severely let down by continual unreliability, I won't make the same mistake twice. |
