1993 Vauxhall Cavalier SRi 16v review from UK and Ireland

"Miles better (and Faster) than you think"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

New front dampers.

New temperature sensor for outside air temp (seems to read 75*c in freezing weather)

Normal little wear and tear bits, but easy to fix.

With it being high performance and as I look after my cars well it gets a fresh oil and filter change every 6 months. (Genuine V/X semi synthetic oil £6.00 a 5ltr tub and oil filter £1.50) bargain.

Flushed the cooling system regularly and fresh coolant as a lad who works for a VX main agent said that they are tough if looked after, but they won't tolerate overheating as the head warps.

So if the header tank sensor goes get it replaced straight away (only £21.00) as it warns if the coolant level is low.

Sometimes seems to hesitate Any ideas?

General comments?

Having listened to the usual stuff in the press and tv about vauxhalls being bad cars to drive I thought it would be a poor car...er wrong.

Out of all older "performance" Fords only cosworths will beat it and the new ones arn't much to write home about either. The rest get eaten.

The first time I realised how fast it was some boy racer in a Saxo VTS (Overated) tried to overtake as he pulled out of a junction behind me. Once I got past the wheelspin in first it just flew :-) The torque meant it just kept going an even at the top end of 4th it was still pulling hard with a classic touring car noise. If you own one of these beasts you know how quick it is!

It shares the non-ecotec engine (2.0 XE) with the GSI 2000 and Astra GSI, but doesn't have the full independant rear suspension.

Luckily the rest of the car can keep up, but the brakes are going to get ferrodo pads for better feel.

As for handling could do with more steering feel, but not bad.
