Exhaust manifold gasket.
Central locking on rear doors - tabs don't always pop up.
Bonnet release mechanism jammed.
Rattles from interior trim.
This cars performance is disappointing, struggles to keep at 70mph on the motorway, even small slopes mean a drop into 4th gear. Engine does not seem powerful enough to pull the weight of the car. As a tow car it is a disaster! Go for the 2.8 TDi if you want reasonable performance, you will not regret it.
The fuel economy varies between 15-20 miles per gallon, you will get only 235 miles out of your 80 litre tank.
The general build quality is okay, there was no signs of rust and the interior was still tidy at 117000 miles, just had to tolerate a few squeaks from the interior trim.
Pre-mid 1995 Fronteras known as Mk 1 are really not an advisable buy if you can afford the little extra for the updated Mk 2 model with rear coil springs and greater pulling power. The Mk 2 is also identified by the black rounded dash panel although some 'halfway hybrids' out there. I am in my 4th year with a 96 2-litre Sport and it tows a large caravan with ease. Be also aware that some Mk 1's had potentially dangerous unprotected petrol tanks (should have a silver insulation material), and faulty welds in the wheels (centres to rims). The Frontera got off to a bad start - especially the spare wheel arrangement on early LWB's, but by late '95 was greatly improved and knocks spots for reliability off most Landrover products.
