1997 Vauxhall Vectra SRi review from UK and Ireland
"A very fast and relatively cheap to own performance car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Steering knock was apparent on hard left turns when the RAC 1st inspected the car before purchasing it, but not considered a major concern. Still there now after 13000 miles and no worse so I have not spent anything to rectify it!
Oil leak from the transmission / clutch area which was traced to the clutch cylinder seal leaking. This was a repeat fault after checking the service history, but with a car of this power is definitely worth replacing / checking frequently.
The standard brakes in general are poor for a car producing 170bhp plus, so 3rd party manufacturers such as tarox / ferodo, etc make a vast improvement.
General comments?
Make sure the cam belt is changed every 40000 miles (not 80000 as it the service intervals originally stated) along with the tensioners and pulleys through a main dealer, this costs around £350 but is well worth it for peace of mind.
A very fast car with ample torque and acceleration and reasonable handling.
The driving experience is good with the sound produced and technology of the Ecotech V6 being 2nd to none and is actually efficient when you want it to be and a monster when you feel like pushing the boundaries a bit.
