1997 Vauxhall Vectra GLS review from UK and Ireland
"Good reliable stable unexciting workhorse"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Some LCD display pixels burned out (replaced at 75000).
Various bulbs burn out regularly (changing 2-3 a year).
Boot lock broke at 102000 (could still
lock with remote control).
Dashboard vibration.
Fuel line might dry out if left stationary for a long time (2 weeks plus) in hot weather - might require jump-start.
Sits could be more comfortable (6 feet tall/95 kg).
General comments?
This car was a fleet car and has a non-standard configuration: many heavy-duty parts, suspension and internal fittings, high-spec tires (rear tires are still original Michelin!).
Very reliable - not a single major fault. Never failed to start except on my mistake (left headlights on). The most expensive single major part replacement was a LCD screen.
Excellent fuel economy (still doing 50-53 mpg as of 106000 mileage).
Long-travel clutch and break pedals - allow very smooth controlled breaking and clutching (although my wife hates it).
At its best on the motorway or trunkroad, not in the city.
Remarkable road-holding and stability at speed and especially in icy conditions - unexpected from large
family car.
Sluggish for acceleration (low-pressure diesel), but not worse then expected.
