1996 Vauxhall Vectra GLS review from UK and Ireland
"A bland nondescript car with inherent problems"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Dashboard dot matrix display replaced five (yes five!) times due to missing pixels.
Front o/s door central locking motor failed.
Interior fan occasionally failed to work.
General comments?
5 door turbo diesel gls hatchback has spacious interior and is quite comfortable with good size boot and good rear passenger space.
Air con, ABS, electric front windows,
electric mirrors, drivers airbag, alarm immobiliser, radio cassette, but no sunroof.
Performance is mediocre, but fuel economy good.
No problems with engine/transmission.
Found out that car had been in two accidents-bad o/s impact and front impact after I got it -check for accident damage before buying.
Had steering column coupling replaced just before I got it to cure the infamous vectra steering knock.
Vauxhall dealers now apply sticky grease to coupling which still does not
solve the problem.
Car is uninspiring to drive and handles like an oil tanker.
Check everything and go for long test drive before buying-but probably best avoided anyway.
Cam chain driven diesel engine is robust, but car electrics may cause problems.
An utterly boring nondescript car.
